Elon Musk, the creator of SpaceX and CEO of Tesla, announced two weeks ago that he would be donating $20 million to Cameron County schools and $10 million to renovate downtown Brownsville, but according to Cameron County officials, he hasn’t approached them to move forward with the donations.
Cameron County school district officials say they have been on standby, waiting for Musk to work with them for the donations, but haven’t heard a word from him.
Local business owners from downtown Brownsville said the announcement from Musk attracted attention to the city, but the renovations haven’t started. Other downtown businesses say that the pandemic has cut back on tourism and are hoping this brings more clients to the area.
