Rainfalls at RGV produce mosquito surge

After recent rainfalls cities at Rio Grande Valley have been fighting with mosquito surges.

“It’s real bad, people can’t even come out of their homes sometimes,” Jose Lopez, an expert repairing septic tanks in the RGV area, said. “The mosquitos are just so bad, we just came from a house on 107 and Mission and we almost ran out of there and had to ask for a blood or something.”

Dr. Christopher Vitek, a UTRGV professor that tracks mosquitoes in the Valley says the early rainfalls have made the area ripe for more.

“We’ve probably seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-100 percent of an increase of mosquitos we’ve collected,” Dr. Christopher Vitek said.

Experts recommend taking precautions, if you have outdoor activities, make sure you use insect repellent, also wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active.
